The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum

(Nursery Children 3-4 years and Reception Children 4-5 years)

Children in the Nursery and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundations Stage curriculum.

They will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through the seven areas of learning and development.


Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:

  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development; and
  • Personal, social and emotional development.


These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:


  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world; and
  • Expressive arts and design.


Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both inside and outside.


Phonics and Reading Schemes

 We use a variety of reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree, Treetops, Bug Club & Phonics Bug. We do not use a particular phonics scheme, we use a variety of strategies to meet the needs of each individual cohort.


The Curriculum at Key Stage One and Two

Year 1 to Year 6

The curriculum in Key Stage 1 and 2 has been completely remodelled to reflect the new National Curriculum. Our curriculum is intended to meet the changing times that we live in and will continue to be developed and updated accordingly. It is hoped that our curriculum motivates and finds hidden talents amongst all of our pupils with the pupils taking ownership of what they learn through a thematic, cross curricular approach.  Current and relevant key drivers shape our curriculum allowing a whole school approach to ensuring all children follow a consistent journey through their school years. Children have lots of opportunity to apply the basic skills of maths, reading, writing and computing within real-life, exciting contexts. 

Our Key Drivers are:

Possibilities: We want to inspire children to broaden their horizons through exposure to a wide range of life possibilities.  Through possibilities we can encourage enterprise; teach financial awareness and responsibility; look at different opportunities and career prospects and investigate global and social mobility.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World: We believe that it is vital that we promote cultural awareness and celebrate diversity.  This is done by relating learning to real life contexts; investigating the impact of important individuals in our world; discovering how and why things work; to foster environmental awareness and to develop our use of technology.

Community: We have an important place within our community and believe it is important that our pupils see themselves within a local context and also learn about the multicultural country that they live in.

The children are taught in mixed ability classes and so the work is differentiated to meet their individual needs. This means that although a class may be working on the same topic, e.g. fractions, the children will be getting different levels of support and will be getting different levels of challenge so that every child learns and progresses with their learning in every lesson.
